Slog Sixes

Age Range:
• 13 - 18 years [Years 9 and 13]

Skill Descriptors:
• Encourage physical activity
• Fast, action packed, modified cricket game that can be played in 30-60 minutes
• Reduce team size [6 a-side] so all players have the chance to display their cricket skills
• Use a minimum of cricket equipment

Objectives:
• To provide a fast and fun version of the game in which all players have an equal opportunity to compete
• To offer schools a format of the game that can be played over a lunchtime or in the duration of a physical education lesson
• To encourage a wide audience of secondary school students to play the game and enjoy the experience
• To utilise the game to foster an interest in other formats of cricket and for players to register in school and/or club teams and for schools to create teams to enter them into local, regional and/or national competitions [eg. Gillette Cup, NZCT Cups]

Outcomes:
To provide participants with opportunities:
• To have fun and enjoy the experience
• To increase their level of physical activity
• To increase the accessibility of the game to participants of all skill and/or ability levels
• To increase participation by secondary school students in the game
• To encourage schools to enter their teams in the national secondary schools’ cricket competitions

Resources:
To support ‘Slog Sixes’ New Zealand Cricket has devised a resource that outlines the objectives, required equipment and rules for this modified format of the game. It also includes a special scoresheet so that team scores can be recorded.

The resource is available from New Zealand Cricket at email info@nzcricket.org.nz or through the Community Cricket Coordinator in each local cricket association.
