As each level of exam is passed and match experience is gained, umpires and scorers become eligible for higher levels of cricket.
For umpires
For umpires, these levels are formalised, in the sense that each exam must be passed before an umpire can be appointed to the next level of cricket. See the accompanying list of Umpire Certification Levels by clicking on the icon in the 'In this section' list.
For scorers
For scorers, these levels are not yet formalised, but will become so once the training and examination process is established over the next few years.
At present, scorers will be expected to demonstrate to STOs neatness, accuracy, and experience at lower levels before advancing to higher levels of cricket. See the Proposed Scorer Levels under the 'In this section' list for the current proposal.
For both umpires and scorers
For both umpires and scorers there are many levels of cricket to become involved in, from junior cricket, through school and club cricket, and on to representative cricket at District, Major Association, and International level.
Whatever the level of cricket, umpires and scorers are always needed, as part of the Laws of Cricket and with ever-increasing roles in the modern game.
Indeed, modern technology has expanded the role of umpiring and scoring, with the advent of third umpires at televised matches, internet scoring, and as illustrated below the need for scorers to be involved in operating both manual and electronic scoreboards at all grounds.
